West Africa: Nigeria, E'Guinea to Collaborate On Security

Lagos — Equatorial Guinea Military has said during a meeting with senior officials of the Nigerian Navy, Army and Air Force, that it seeks to strength en areas of cooperation with Nigeria in maritime security.

The country's military delegation, led by Vice Minister for Defence, Lt. Geeral. Anthonio Ndong, are visiting naval installations in Lagos, Port Harcourt and Warri.

Ndong said "the objective is for us to go round and see things that you have and what you would offer to us. We would then agree on the final things that would be beneficial to us."

Meanwhile, Nigeria has listed joint naval patrols along common maritime boundary, maritime information sharing, training assistance and ship repairs and upgrade as major areas it could strengthen existing cooperation.

Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ganiyu Adekeye, told the delegation that through the areas listed, "our bilateral cooperation and security in the Gulf of "Guinea will be enhanced."

He reminded the delegation that the Nigerian Navy played a major role in the establishment of the Equatorial Guinea Navy in 1986, as it sent officers and rating to train the first set of personnel.

Adekeye also said as part of measures to build more confidence in the cooperation, two ships of the Navy would sail to Equatorial Guinea for training and flag visits.

He also announced Nigeria's offer of training slots for Equatorial Guinean naval personnel in Nigerian naval institutions.

Other members of the delegation include Rear Admiral Roberto Mba Ndong, Secretary of Defence, Colonel Pedro Nguema, Airforce Col. Francisco Obama, DG of Military Cooperation and Capt. Agapito Obiang, Director of Logistics/Planning, all of the Equatorial Guinea ministry of Defence.
