Angola: SADC - Top Army Officer Awarded Medal

Mbia — A high ranking officer of the Angolan Armed Forces (FAA) Col. Carlos dos Santos Francisco was awarded Friday in Lusaka, Zambia, a medal of merit in recognition of his performance in the preparations for the creation of Standby Brigade of the Southern African Development Community (SADC).

The awarded officer belongs to the Angolan contingent integrating the SADC Standby Force that was presented this Friday, in Lusaka, at the Zambian Air Base, to the community's Heads of State and Government, on the sidelines of the 27th Summit of this regional body, scheduled to end on the same day.

Colonel Carlos Francisco, along with 11 other officers of members States of the brigade, received the prize from Zambian President, Levy Muanawasa, in recognition of their dedication to the final planning of the works to create the Standby Brigade.

Speaking to ANGOP, in the Zambian capital, the Angolan officer said he felt honoured and proud with the distinction and dedicated the attributed medal to Angola, as the country continues progressing in the context of resolution of conflicts that could eventually emerge in the African continent.

Angolan Head of State, José Eduardo dos Santos, and his counterparts of countries of the organisation attended the presentation ceremony of the SADC Brigade.

The presentation ceremony of the brigade of multidisciplinary contingents was also attended by the Angolan Defence minister, Kundi Paihama, vice ministers of Home Affairs, Ângelo Veigas Tavares, Foreign Affairs, George Chicoty, Angolan Armed Forces' chief of staff, general Francisco Pereira Furtado, National Police general commander, general commissioner Ambrósio de Lemos, SADC chiefs of staff and police commanders, the executive secretary of the organisation, Tomás Salomão, among other individualities.

SADC comprises of Angola, South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Tanzania, Botswana, DR Congo, Lesotho, Malawi, Namibia, Swaziland, Madagascar, and Mauritius.
