Eritrea: Ambassador Andeab Holds Talks With Australian Foreign Minister

17 August 2007

Melbourne — Eritrea's Ambassador to Australia and New Zealand, Dr. Andeab Gebremeskel, held talks with Mr. Alexander Dawner, the Australian Foreign Minister, on bilateral relations.

Noting that development could not be achieved without ensuring peace, Dr. Andeab indicated that the effort Eritrea has made and is still making to promote comprehensive peace in Sudan is part of its endeavors to promote peace and stability in the region. He further stated that the peace agreement reached between the Sudanese Government of National Unity and the East Sudan Front under the care and mediation of Eritrea attests to this.

As regards the Darfur issue, the Ambassador pointed out that Eritrea continues to play constructive role and that it is the desire of the people and Government of Eritrea to resolve the issue peacefully.

Stating that the stance of the people and Government of Eritrea on the Somali issue is ensuring lasting peace in that country through reconstituting of a free Somali nation, Dr. Andeab explained that Ethiopia's intervention would not bring lasting solution and that has no legality. He further underlined that Ethiopia should leave Somalia without any precondition if peace is to prevail in Somalia and the region as a whole.

The Ambassador went on to say that the Australian government is expected to give technical assistance to Eritrea's in the reconstruction and development programs in the domains of agriculture, education and health, as well as human resource development.

The Australian Foreign Minister, Alexander Dawner on his part expressed admiration to Eritrea's efforts to stabilize the region and commended bilateral endeavors being made to strengthen relations between Eritrea and Australia.

In a related report, Ambassador Andeab met with Mr. Bruce Davis, Director General of the Australian International Developments Monitoring Office, during which he gave briefings on the Eritrean government's endeavors to rehabilitate displaced citizens due to the TPLF regime's invasion. Mr. Bruce asserted that Australia would cooperate in the rehabilitation process.
