Burundi: MP's Fail to Agree

20 August 2007

Bujumbura — Members of the National Assembly met in plenary session on Friday August 17th.

In this session that is called 'Diverse questions' the setting up of a parliamentarian commission to probe into the sale of the presidential plane, Falcon 50, had to be analyzed.

But this session failed when the chairman of the CNDD-FDD, the ruling wing, asked MP Mabobori Catherine to apologize for what she said in a radio program that was aired by Isanganiro.

This rather brought about many discussions bringing on the surface the issue of 39 members of parliament whose pictures, fathers and places of origin were disclosed in a pro CNDD-FDD newspaper'Intumwa' N° 108 which portrayed them as mercenaries. This action made those MP's feel targeted. As matter of fact, on Sunday Agust 19 several MP's Nduwabike Jean Marie, Mpawenayo Pasteur, Félicien, Nephtali Ndikumana and the former vice-president Bamvuginyumvira were attacked at their residences. Grenades were launched at their homes, but luckly there were no victims.

This session was later postponed for next week. The assembly failed to agree on a very important issue. The sale of Falcon 50 was dogged by many irregularities. Although the minister of finance who ordered its sale was later dismissed, his dismissal was seen by some political experts as a scapegoat.
