Southern Africa: SADC Electoral Commissions Meeting Starts

Luanda — The ninth conference of members of the Electoral Commissions with the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) started this Monday in Luanda, to debate, among others issues, electoral campaigns and freedom of expression in emerging democracies, Angop has learnt.

Organised under the umbrella of the National Electoral Commission of Angola, participants in the two-day gathering will also debate matters relating to the media and elections, and on 22 August they will hold an annual meeting.

Topping the discussing agenda are themes like "The contribute of the press for the creation of a climate towards the holding of free and fair elections", "Commitment of national diffusion organs in the SADC countries and Media", "Freedom of expression and electoral administration".

"Democratisation of elections in Southern Africa", "Challenges in the use of norms, patterns and principles" as well as "The Impact of access to information during the elections" are also on the agenda.

The lecturers are Rob Jamieson, chairman of the forum of editors of southern Africa, the general secretary of the association of media organs of southern Africa, Arlindo Lopers, and the spokesman of the national electoral commission of Angola, Adao de Almeida.

Mozambique is in the charge of the mentioned forum, whereas South Africa is the deputy president.

The Forum of Electoral Commissions of SADC is made up by Angola, Botswana, Namibia, Swaziland, Zambia, Mauritius, Lesotho, Malawi, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Zanzibar and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
