The new face in short film, animation and indie music appreciation - Short & Sweet is a new flavour, a cultural endeavour, a lifestyle switch... and the best way to spend a couple of hours on Sunday, and after a successful debut in Johannesburg, it's coming to the Armchair Theatre in Cape Town.
Already a global enterprise, Short & Sweet was created to provide a platform off which young, innovative filmmakers and animators could display their dazzling array of contempo visual artistry. However, Short & Sweet South Africa aims to take it a step further through a marriage to the art of music.
The afternoon rolls out at 4pm on September 2nd, alongside a lively musical surprise, and a very special guest speaker, Gillian Gorfil. Gillian, the Executive Producer on the blockbuster, Blood Diamond, will enlighten young independent filmmakers through tales of a passionate life, dedicated to film.
In line with Short & Sweet's vibe, the event will be hosted at the Independent Armchair Theatre, one of the most important and longstanding live music venues in South Africa. As a respected cornerstone of the Cape Town landscape, The Armchair is one of the best loved venues for South Africa's musicians, artists, filmmakers and performers.
The culmination of the event will be 90 minutes of mind-expansive film, whose origins span the entire surface of the earth. The intention is not only to entertain, but to educate and inspire change - change in both thought and action.
Max Pichulik, the founder of Short & Sweet, comments: "We are creating a vehicle for creative independents to showcase their work to an interactive, appreciative audience. Short film and indie music artists share attributes of limited budget, a passion for their creation and the inclusion of social messaging that challenges the minds and preconceptions of the world. Short & Sweet seeks to represent that platform.
"The Sunday culture among South African youth feels shallow and somewhat diluted by the usual Friday and Saturday antics. Our mission is to grow a culture that feeds on innovation and breeds inspiration. The philosophy behind Short & Sweet is core to our hungry youth culture and we want to serve up a hefty bloody dose of the stuff."
