Burundi: Waves of Congolese Refugees Flock to Bujumbura

21 August 2007

Bujumbura — Congolese refugees continue to flock to Bujumbura fleeing raids that broke out in Democratic Republic of Congo in mid July 2007. They camp nearby the offices of the UNHCR in Bujumbura in very despairing hygienic conditions waiting to be registered.

Recently the government of Bujumbura issued temporary residence permits to more than 300 Congolese refugees who were afterwards transferred to Musasa in Ngozi province.

The Burundian administration indicates that the registration of these Congolese refugees is slowed down by the fact that they do not register when they cross the border.

This wave of refugees to Burundi continues when the government of Burundi is readying itself to receive many Burundians to return from Tanzanian refugees camps.
