Burundi: Christian Police Announce Key Conference in September

21 August 2007

Nairobi — Christian police officers from around Africa will hold a conference next month to study their role as peacemakers and agents of reconciliation.

The 4th Pan-Africa Christian Police Associations Conference (PACPAC 2007) will take place from September 23 to 29 at the Swedish Mission Centre, Bujumbura, Burundi. The Burundian government and police authorities have approved the conference, which has also received pledges of support from church leaders in Bujumbura.

"The main goal of the conference is to build a critical mass of skilled Christian police leaders who are well equipped in peacemaking and conflict resolution, and who can train and mobilize other officers in promoting peace," said PACPAC executive director, Kibinge wa Muturi.

The conference will have three main objectives, according to Muturi, first, to sensitize and equip Christian police leaders on their role as peacemakers and agents of reconciliation in situations of conflict.

The second objective will be to provide training to Christian police leaders in Africa in the following key areas of public service: ethics, leadership, discipleship and evangelism.

And thirdly, the conference will be an opportunity to reach out to the French-speaking African countries and to help strengthen the Christian Police Association in Burundi.

The conference targets Christian Police leaders from Africa drawn from all ranks. Special focus will be on French-speaking African countries and any other country that has gone through civil war or armed conflict.

Each country will be expected to send only four delegates. The host country, Burundi, and Rwanda will, however, be allowed to bring twenty delegates each.
