Harare — Women should be innovative and engage in self-help projects to empower themselves economically, says Senator for Harare South, Mbare and Hatfield Cde Vivian Mwashita-Muchicho.
Speaking at a graduation ceremony for women clubs in Chitungwiza on Monday, Senator Mwashita-Muchicho said youths and women should be innovative, creative and be actively involved in economic development.
She said it was important to recognise the work done by supporting organisations such as Valor Movement whose objective was to empower the family unit through small businesses. "We are working with the Ministry of Youth Development and Women's Affairs in pursuing the Valor vision and to ensure that we effectively empower the family unit," said Senator Mwashita-Muchicho.
She said engaging in economic activities would help reduce poverty and instill a sense of belonging in the women. "It is very important to establish projects in the community as they give people the opportunity to showcase their talents and help in the development of the nation.
"Youths and women in particular are the cornerstone in the production of the economy so they should not be left out in programmes but should participate more, " she said. Senator Mwashita-Muchicho later launched Youth of Valor project, which seeks to empower youths and women in the church so that they become self-reliant.
At least 134 women from 50 groups in Zengeza-Chitungwiza district were presented with certificates after completing courses in shoe making and dressmaking among other courses supported by the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, a German non-governmental organisation and self-help development fund.
