Burundi: Lack of Infrastructures Restrain Burundi Scholars From Returning

22 August 2007

Bujumbura — More than 163 persons have not yet returned to Burundi after they completed their doctoral studies abroad. This was raised in a three-day workshop that started on August 21st, 2007 here in Bujumbura.

This workshop was launched by the First Vice-President of the Republic and is aimed at fixing issues that the national educational system is facing.

The workshop is started when the higher education is paralysed by series of demonstrations which delay the academic years. More than 20 teachers from the University of Burundi have moved to Rwanda where the pay is comparatively good.

The lack of infrastructures is one of the issues that was raised. The Head of State, Mr Pierre Nkurunziza indicated that other universities were to be built in other provinces, but this remained a promise.
