The Nigeria-Lesotho Nations Cup qualifier on September 8 is a one day event but Delta State which hosts the match classes the event more than that.
Delta wants to use the match to showcase the beauty of Warri Stadium which Berti Vogts described as "magnificent", the current peaceful nature of Warri city and Delta State and the sports culture of the people in the hope that they would host more international events.
Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan made this clear yesterday when he inaugurated a 15 man Local Organising Committee (LOC) for the match.
He charged the committee to ensure not only a smooth organisation of the match but one that is befitting of world class standard.
"I want to thank the Nigeria Football Association for giving us the hosting right for the match. I equally want to thank the Super Eagles manager, Berti Vogts who inspected Warri and found it good to host the match. We will not fail them. Bringing such a match to our place is what we have been dreaming of. We have to live up to expectations and also showcase the beauty of the Warri Stadium which was one of the babies of Governor James Ibori.
"Football is big business and we have to make it what it is. I am sure that this committee which has the likes of Solomon Ogba, our former ever winning commissioner of sports, one time NFA chairman, Dominic Oneya and some people who have seen it all in sports will do a good job and I want to assure the NFA, Berti Vogts and the entire country that we shall not fail them."
|
Responding, Chief Ogba reminded the audience that Governor Uduaghan has always been not just a sports loving person but a participant in sports and assured him that the committee, in partnership with the NFA, will organise a match that everybody would be proud of.
