Nairobi — The Government has issued an alert over the sale of counterfeit malaria drugs.

The follows the seizure of hundreds of packets of fake Duo-Cotecxin drugs in Nairobi by the Pharmacy and Poisons Board.

Details have also emerged that other counterfeit medicines were found in Maua, Meru North. A man suspected to be involved in the syndicate is in custody

The Director of Medical services, Dr James Nyikal, could not confirm the volume of counterfeit anti-malarial drugs in circulation, but advised the public to be on the look out. "Investigation is on to know the extent of distribution and identify individuals or companies behind the racket," he said.

Last week, the Holley-cotec Pharmaceuticals said it would recall 20,000 doses of an anti-malarial drug after discovering a counterfeit syndicate.
