Kampala — Having come from prison and directly onto stage, the Jinja-based artiste, Engineer Kateregga, is now enjoying a celebrity lifestyle. He often travels to Sweden, Denmark, the US, Kenya and Rwanda for shows and sometimes shopping.
Here, Engineer Kateregga is donning a designer collection, mostly by Diesel. The rest of the accessories have been bought from Masaai traders at Namanga border post. The chequered T-shirt, which was bought with a matching belt cost 600 Kroner (about sh150,000) from the Diesel outlet in Copenhagen. Kateregga's jeans are also by the same designer.
They cost about 1,200 Kroner (sh300,000). The Diesel boots go for 1800 Kroner (sh450,000).
Kateregga's other necklaces have been bought from Mombasa and Namanga. The silver jewellery costs Ksh18,000 (sh432,000) from the Nakumatt at Mombasa. The cowrie shell necklace goes for Ksh 5,000 (sh124,000) at Fort Jesus, Mombasa, while the beaded wristband goes for Ksh2,000 (sh48,000) from roadside traders at the Namanga border post.
However, you do not have to travel thousands of miles to achieve Engineer Kateregga's look. At Kagame's Boutique on Sunset Arcade, Diesel jeans go for sh80,000. These come in various colours, including black, dirty blue and corduroys. You can also find genuine Diesel jeans at the Rainbow Arcade on Kampala Road.
Diesel T-shirts are rare in Kampala, but you could buy a similar T-shirt from De Link, a shop on Katatumba Suites for about sh50,000. There are also T-shirts at Mutaasa Kafeero Plaza, Mukwano Arcade and Nakivubo Mews. Here, T-shirts go for sh15,000, while jeans cost sh25,000. These are, however, imitations from Thailand and Hong Kong. You can supplement these with a matching glossy belt that costs sh25,000 at the Cham Towers.
Men's designer boots go for sh250,000 at the Street Feet Shoes on Ivory Plaza, Wilson Road. And, if you do not mind second-hand Diesel boots, try Ramirez Shoes on Ben Kiwanuka Street where they go for sh80,000. Bead necklaces are available everywhere in Kampala. At Exposure Africa on Buganda Road, you can get a cowrie shell necklace ranging from sh1,000 to sh3,000. The beaded wristband goes for sh5,000.
Genuine silver necklaces range from sh30,000 to sh80,000 at Jit Jewellers on Cham Towers. Never mind that Engineer Kateregga spent about sh1.5m on his look. Anyone can achieve a similar look for sh180,000.
