Ghana: Make Us Proud Wherever You Go

Accra — AS PART of bridging the gap between the United Kingdom (UK) and Ghana, ten young people have been selected for an exchange programme in exploring their intellectual dialogue among communities and societies internationally and locally.

Addressing the gathering at the "Belongings Pre-Departure Briefing", the Deputy Minister of Tourism and Diasporan Relations, Hon. Kofi Osei-Ameyaw advised the ten participants to make Ghana proud and sell the country especially its culture positively

He further advised them to put up good behavior and not put Ghana's name in disrepute.

The Deputy Director, British Council, Amanda Griffiths noted that "the ten were among the four hundred (400) young people, who would be involved with this project through carrying out bilateral cultural exchange."

According to her, the programme was a celebration of culture identity and it also aimed at encouraging young people from Africa and the UK to explore notions of culture and identity, to generate fresh ideas, challenge old stereotypes, to create new understandings for themselves as individuals and for their communities and create new relationships that would contribute to a better future for both Africans and the UK

She disclosed that they anticipate reciprocating visits by 10 young people to Ghana at the end of this year. She emphasized on the fact that, belongings project aimed to bring about greater mutuality of understanding of purpose and of future decision-making.

The National Coordinator for Global Youth Action Network (GYAN), Kwame Anang Frimpong said GYAN found it meaningful, to partnering with the British Council in execution the belongings project giving the reason that its youth component, the sharing and exchange of ideas, culture and identity and the change that it brings to the individuals and society especially in regards to perceptions.

He encouraged the 10 participants to keep their eyes wide open and take advantages of the opportunities presented while in UK. He also discouraged any indecent or racist behavior and not withstanding the fact that participants should make Ghana proud by exhibiting to the UK the human potential and cultural diversity Ghana to present.

A Representative of Self-Help Initiative Support Services (SISS) Miss Irene Maria Quarshie said the organization believes that consequently the interaction between participants of Africa and UK 2007 Belonging Exchange Programme and students in various schools listed for the project will instigate the latter to transform their aspirations to become their aspirants in life.

Flagging the Deputy Minister were the Acting British High Commissioner, Mr. Richard Powell and the Deputy Minister for Education, Baiden Amissah.
