Bujumbura — Violence is gaining momentum in areas bordering with the Kibira forest. In Musigati, inhabitants of places that border with the forest started to flee a week ago to nearby military positions. This instability follows acts of robbery that are reportedly committed by combatants of FNL-PALIPEHUTU who plunder households.
In Kayanza province, a person was killed in Kabarore commune in an operation that FNL-PALIPEHUTU combatants carried out at a locality called Yanza on this 22 August by night. After the attack during which Mr Etienne Nkurikiye was beheaded, a plantation of potatoes was harvested by the same combatants. It is reported that this operation was carried out by a group of combatants based in Ndora of Cibitoke province not far from the Kibira forest.
Ever since the combatants of FNL PALIPEUTU returned to the bush acts of robbery have escalated mainly in the stronghold of this last movement which signed a cease fire with the government of Bujumbura on 7 September 2006.
Security was also disturbed in Kamenge zone of Bujumbura city on this 23 August by night when a former combatant threw a grenade in a compound located in Gikizi quarter 8th avenue wounding seriously two persons.
These acts of violence continue to be committed while the head of State indicated in Kayanza province a week ago that security is guaranteed on the whole land of Burundi. These acts make it obvious that the campaign for disarmament of civilians have failed as most of crimes involving guns are committed by combatants who have been demobilized in places where FNL-PALIPEHUTU is not very effective.
