Kampala — A Primary Six pupil died instantly and five others sustained serious burns when lightning struck them. The incident happened at Irundu Township Primary School, Kagulu sub-county in Kamuli district recently.

The headmistress, Hellen Nandyobya, said Joweriya Namukobe was burnt beyond recognition.

Those admitted at Irundu health centre were Immaculate Kaleega (P.7), Emmy Namanda (P.5), Abdu Sharuri (P.6), Joy Nguna (P.6) and James Kagaire (P.6).

The officer in charge of Irundu Police post, John Okot, said the pupils had sought shelter in one of the classrooms as it started to rain.

As lightning struck, the pupils started to scream in fright, Okot added.

"The teachers rushed to the classroom and found Namukobe dead, while the survivors were writhing in pain," the Police post commander explained recently.
