Owerri — THE management of Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), has banned the sale and serving of all brands of alcoholic drinks in the university campus.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Celestine O.E. Onwuliri, read the riot act while inaugurating the Committee on Environmental Sanitation headed by Professor Kas M. Ibe.

"This administration is no longer very comfortable with the prevalent high level of consumption of alcoholic drinks by students, even as early as 10am. I cannot cease to wonder how a student soaked in alcohol that early, can diligently attend to his studies and make a success of his career," Professor Onwuliri said.

He directed the Registrar to communicate this decision to the entire university community, including the Students Union Government and the private restaurants owners operating within the campus, as well as ensure compliance at meetings and elsewhere on campus.

Professor Onwuliri charged the Committee on Environ-mental Sanitation with the responsibility of enforcing proper environmental sanitation in the institution.

"It is the considered opinion of FUTO management that in our sincere effort to improve the scenery of the university, as well as upgrade the living standards of the staff and students of FUTO, the last Friday of every month is declared an environmental sanitation day," Onwuliri said.
