Uganda: More Than 70 Die in Road Accident

27 August 2007

The death toll in a major road accident in Uganda has risen to more than 70, agencies report.

The BBC reports that at least 57 of the people killed were Ugandan People's Defence Force (UPDF) soldiers. Forty other people were injured in the crash, according to the Associated Press.

Uganda's New Vision newspaper reported earlier today that the accident happened when the truck the soldiers and their wives were travelling in overturned on the Kapchorwa-Sironko road in Eastern Uganda and rolled down a cliff.

"The brakes of the truck failed while it was rolling down [the] cliff", Kapchorwa district police commander Nicholas Ngozi is quoted as saying.
