Abuja — The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has launched an enlightenment campaign in Abaji area council.

A statement issued yesterday by Mallam Umar Salihu Kombo, press secretary to Abaji area council chairman, said the aim of the campaign was to lessen the dangers of fake, adulterated and expired drugs to the society.

It said NAFDAC official at the ceremony, held at Abaji town hall, Mr B.A. Yusuf, told residents of the area that fake drugs were those that have insufficient and inactive ingredients, and also those that have fraudulent mixture of herbal and orthodox substances.

He said: "Adulteration of drugs is one of the greatest evils of our time. It is also a form of terrorism against public health, as well as an act of economic sabotage."

The chairman of the area council, Alhaji Yahaya Musa Mohammed, at the occasion, thanked NAFDAC for choosing Abaji for the campaign. He urged participants to make use of the knowledge they acquired at the occasion to free themselves from the dangers of fake drugs.

"It is my hope that at the end of the campaign, drug sellers in the area will submit all adulterated drugs to NAFDAC for destruction," the chairman said.
