The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) said on Monday all was set to launch an exhibition of paintings on Ethiopian role model women it considers as the 'heroes of society'.
In a statement, UNFPA-Ethiopia said the primary objective of the exhibition to kick off Wednesday at the Makush Art Gallery was to celebrate "Ethiopia's women." A portrait and sculpture of 13 historic and contemporary women role models by 13 winners of an art competition sponsored by the UNFPA will be put on display, the statement indicated.
The paintings depict selected women among millions in the country who have and are participating in Ethiopia's development.
The portraits range from one of Empress Taitu Betul, to Abebech Gobena, and Meseret Defar.
"These were or are real women, who all Ethiopians have reason to be proud of: for their sense of duty to society and womankind," the statement quoted Monique Rakotomalala, UNFPA Ethiopia Country Representative as saying.
"More pointedly, these women were and are gatekeepers of Ethiopian culture, who have shown that giving up harmful traditional practices is compatible with maintaining values," she said.
The statement further indicated that the portraits will appear in a calendar, being printed in connection with the new millennium under the theme "The Face of Ethiopian women in the new millennium".

High level officials from the Government of Ethiopia, the donor community and the United Nations are expected to attend the event, as well as the artists who painted the portraits, along with invited guests.
