Ghana: Don't Copy Foreign Cultures

The Centre for Christian Communication and Media Research has organized a one-day seminar for youth leaders and some invited pastors in the Ashaiman municipality, dubbed "the influence of the Popular media on Children". The youth of various orthodox and charismatic churches were also invited for the programme.

Addressing participants at the Central Ghana Presby Church over the weekend, the organizer of the programme, Rev. Francis Botchway, expressed worry about the rate at which the youth of today forget their culture and values due to their exposure to the foreign culture through the media, which has eaten into the fiber of the Ghanaian community in recent times.

He adhered to the fact that, media literacy education has been in existence over the past thirty years in the advanced countries but due to its unavailability in Africa, it has led to the uncontrolled and gullible consumption of media programme especially the foreign ones by children.

Youth leaders present at the occasion were given handouts containing possible causes of the influence of the media, out of which they were to present solutions. Various solutions ranging from the control of the media to the strict supervision of children by their parents were offered. They also gave out empirical measures to handling issues on newspapers that contain pornographic materials and some programmes aired on radio, which are not favorable to children.

The youth leader of the Ashaiman Newtown branch of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church, Seyram Gadeka, stressed on the point that, children like to practice what they see, especially on the screens. He advised that, that spirit be killed in the children, for the nation to move forward.

He added that even though the seminar had given them an insight, it was not possible for the information to get to the entire populace.

He however suggested that, the programme should be organized frequently and the venue changed from time to time.
