Eritrea: President Holds Talks With UN Under Secretary General for Political Affairs

President Isaias today received and held talks with Mr. Lyn Pasco, UN Under Secretary General for Political Affairs. In the meeting, the two sides held in-depth discussion on the implementation process of the EEBC ruling, the Sudanese peace process in general and the Darfur issue in particular, as well as the situation in Somalia.

Following understanding that a peaceful resolution of the Darfur issue is an integral part of the comprehensive peaceful solution in Sudan, they underlined that the steps taken so far is encouraging and that the necessary preparation should be made for next month's talks between the Sudanese government and Darfur opposition organizations.

Mr. Lyn Pasco asserted that the UN Secretary General positively assesses and admires Eritrea's on-going endeavors to promote comprehensive peaceful solution in Sudan, especially the Darfur issue in partnership with the United Nations and the African Union.

On the Somali issue, President Isaias underscored that the basic question should be the reconstituting of Somalia as a state, and to this end there should take place a serious political process in which all parties must participate. Out of this, forcing to impose one party over the Somali people or trying to resolve the issue through coercion would not only work but is also futile, he added.

Pointing out that Eritrea views the Somali issue not from the standpoint of its conflict with Ethiopia but emanates from strong conviction that a united, stable and reconstituted Somalia which could play constructive role in promoting regional peace, the President stated that Eritrea is ready to cooperate with the United Nations and all those parties striving to promote a peaceful solution in Somalia. President Isaias further elaborated the UN official that attempts to convey Eritrea as a cause for the prevailing problem in Somalia is not only baseless but also futile.

Mr. Pasco on his part indicated that the UN solely believes in peaceful solution and also expressed readiness to exchange views and cooperate with Eritrea towards in endeavors to bring about peace.

As regards the Eritrea-Ethiopia border issue, Mr. Lyn Pasco explained that the UN expects positive steps would be taken at the forthcoming meeting in The Hague that is organized by the Boundary Commission.

Underscoring that the implementation of the EEBC ruling is the fundamental question, President Isaias underlined that if there really exists readiness to implement the ruling, Eritrea, as usual, stands ready.
