South Africa: Honours for Top Researchers

29 August 2007

Tshwane — A group of 19 of the country's eminent researchers in various fields are to be recognised for their efforts and bestowed with awards, Thursday.

The National Research Foundation (NRF) will honour the scholars at their annual NRF Presidents Awards, which will be attended by dignitaries including Minister of Science and Technology Mosibudi Mangena. The awards, which will be handed out at the Sheraton Hotel in Tshwane, recognise researchers who have made a significant mark and impact in their fields of research.

The annual NRF Presidents Awards follow a stringent adjudication process, which entails applications from the local academic and scientific community, being peer reviewed via the NRF's rating and evaluation system.

Since the NRF evaluation and rating system for researchers came into effect more than 3500 researchers have applied for evaluation and rating, and about 16 000 experts from all over the globe have participated as reviewers.

The NRF rating system seeks primarily to recognise researchers who are producing quality research output while ensuring that they remain accountable and efficient.

Categories for the awards are: A-rated researchers, which are those rated the best in their field of work; P-rated researchers, those younger than 35-years-old who display potential for growth and a Lifetime Achievement Award for individuals who made outstanding contributions to the development of science in, and for, South Africa's development.
