Masaka — THE World Bank has disqualified Masaka Municipality from accessing sh600m for the garbage management project on grounds that the town lacked a dumping site.
In an interview recently, Gerald Musoke, the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) deputy executive director, said: "The World Bank officials found two streets in Masaka town with hips of garbage. The trucks and skips were not operational and the town lacked a proper structure to manage the project," he said.
Masaka Town was ranked as the dirtiest town in the country according to the Masaka resident district commissioner, Bamusedde Bwambale.
Musoke said the municipal authorities showed the World Bank officials a dumping site located on land owned by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) at Bwala.
However, the acting town clerk, Martin Ssentongo, said the dumping site at Bwala is shared by the Municipal Council and CAA.
Other towns to benefit from the 14-year-project include Mbarara, Kabale, Kasese, Fort Portal, Jinja, Mukono, Soroti and Lira.
Each of the towns would receive a tractor, garbage skips, truck and a garbage processing plant.
He said the project will transform waste solids into compost organic manure to boost farming.
