Bujumbura

A commission to assign a value to the piece of land where buildings housing the major institutions of the Republic will be constructed has started its work today.

Its aim is to set the value of the land so as to facilitate the compensation of those people who live or own properties in this area. The building site is in an area called Gishingano that lies partly in both the communes of ISARE and Gihosha. The commission will work with the leaders of both ISARE and Gihosha.

The project of building the offices of the President of the Republic in Gishingano dates back to 2005 when Senator Domitien Ndayizeye was still the President of the Republic. Since that time, the population of Gishingano has lived in constant fear of being disowned of the land that constitutes their main source of income. Most of the low-price bricks that are used in the construction industry of Bujumbura are made from clay from this area.

The people of Gishingano are still worried that the compensation they receive might not correspond to the actual value of their properties. The value of plots in Gishingano rose after the decision to construct important government facilities there was made.

Most major governmental institutions, including the office of the President of the Republic, have no physical office space of their own and so are forced to rent from other institutions. The construction of these offices will begin soon after the completion of the work of this commission
