Cape Town — The National Research Foundation (NRF) will honour 19 top researchers for excellence in their research at an awards ceremony to be attended by the Minister of Science and Technology Mosibudi Mangena at the Sheraton Hotel in Pretoria this evening, Thursday 30 August 2007.
The NRF is South Africa's national agency for promoting and supporting research across all fields of humanities, social and natural sciences, engineering and technology.
Stringent evaluation
The awards recognise researchers who have made a significant mark and impact in their fields of research. The annual NRF Presidents Awards follows a stringent evaluation and rating process whereby applications from the local academic and scientific community are peer reviewed via the NRF's rating and evaluation system.
Since the NRF evaluation and rating system for researchers came into effect more than 3500 researchers have applied for evaluation and rating, and about 16 000 experts from all over the globe have participated as reviewers.
The NRF rating system seeks primarily to recognise researchers who are producing quality research output while ensuring that they remain accountable and efficient.
Categories for the awards are:
A-rated researchers- researchers rated the best in their field of work
P-rated researchers - researchers under 35 with growth potential
Lifetime Achievement Award -iIndividuals who made outstanding contribution to the development of science in and for the development of South Africa.
