40 years ago, on August 24th 1967, Lufthansa landed for the first time at the Kotoka International Airport, operating a Boeing 707 Aircraft in combination with another West African destination, Abidjan, Ivory Coast.
Commenting on its 40 years of dedicated commitment to Ghana, Lufthansa General Manager Mr. Silvio Uhlfelder stated: "It is a great honor to celebrate our 40th anniversary in Ghana in the same year that Ghana celebrates its 50th Jubilee since independence". He further said, "Our passengers are able to enjoy complete flexibility of choice with daily frequencies as well as better and seamless travel through our "Airline Network for earth - Star Alliance" of which Lufthansa is a founding member, also celebrating a jubilee this year with 10 years of Star Alliance".
The preparations of Lufthansa's 40 years of serving Ghana are under way. To mark the anniversary special fares and promotions have been planned for passengers and loyal travel agents till the end of the year.
Touching on the history of the airline in Ghana, Mrs. Babette Melling, the Marketing Manageress of Lufthansa Ghana said the Frankfurt - Accra- Abidjan route of Lufthansa was operated uninterrupted till the 27th March 1981 when the two weekly flights were withdrawn from operation due to a lack of a modern aircraft to satisfy the market requirements at that time. Twelve years later Lufthansa was back into the Ghanaian market again.
The Accra route was resumed on the 2nd November 1993 with two weekly flights in combination with another West African destination Lagos, Nigeria operating an Airbus 300-600. Since the resumption of flights into Accra, the frequencies have steadily increased to five flights a week effective 18th June 2003. The optimum of daily frequencies was achieved on the 7th April 2005.
Today Lufthansa operates the A340 state of the art aircraft seven times a week on its Ghana-Germany routes. The new business class offers maximum comfort, more space, a diverse information and entertainment program and excellent service on board with seats converting into a two meter complete flat bed.
