Cameroon: Telecentres - Farce or Reality

The populations of the rural areas where telecentres exist are not sensitised enough on the importance of such technology.

The multipurpose community telecentres is an infrastructure which offers telecommunication services, computer science, audiovisual and Internet services from a terminal or terminals given to a community to enable them communicate at a cheaper rate. The telecentres are associated with proximity community services. However, the existence of the multipurpose community telecentres still remains a farce for many Cameroonians. Majority of the people living in the rural areas and even in the urban areas have not seen or head about telecentres. Those who have seen them do not know the use of such infrastructure neither do they know the advantages. The reasons for such ignorance are many and varied. The populations of the rural areas were telecentres exit are not sensitised enough on the importance of telecentres. Also in those areas where the telecentres exist the populations complain of difficulties in getting connected with the Internet..

The multipurpose community telecentres is an infrastructure whose major goal is to offer telecommunications services, computer science, audiovisual and Internet services to the rural population at a reduced rate. This infrastrcutre is also destined for all activities and development projects in rural areas. The government throught the Ministry of Post and telecommunication is organising training workshops for trainers in the domain. The second workshop took place in Yaounde last week. The trainers will in turn train their village communities on the use of ICTs. The first training workshop for managers and operators of multipurpose community telecentres took place in 2005. Launched with 17 telecentres, in the pilot phase, the project now has 35 telecentres and the plan is to cover every division in the country. Already, eight new telecentres will soon go operational in the country. As a result, the Ministry of Post and Telecommunication intends to open 180 telecenters throughout the national territory by 2012.
