Uganda: Ganja Planter Thrills Revellers

Kampala — The year 2007 has left a bunch of established or rather award-winning artistes crest-fallen after following their respective album launches flopped - maybe it is how they are facing aging because most up-and-coming artistes have had notably successful album launches.

And the mammoth crowd that crammed Sabrina's Pub last Friday and Ssese Gateway Beach on Sunday, indisputably accorded budding artiste Henry Tigan a new status that is simply not far from being a giant on the music scene.

"This guy is just as big as Chogm, so I christen him Henry Chogm," said the self-proclaimed "President of the Ghetto Republic of Uganja" Bobi Wine who is also the reigning Artiste of the Year.

The big turn-up shocked everybody in attendance, thanks to KFM, NTV and Daily Monitor, the events' sponsors.

Unlike several concerts that have been held at Sabrina's Pub, the stage wore a unique decoration, the sound was perfect and the artistes performed on time and it wouldn't get better than that especially since KFM presenter Roger Mugisha was the emcee.

Musicians including Rita Kigozi, Denis Rackla, Toolman, Sarah Zawedde, Gen. Mega Dee, Buchaman and Nubian Li were at their best with lively performances.

And Bobi Wine was simply hot and besides calling upon the public to support Ugandan musicians, the Kiwani star also highly appreciated Tigan's outstanding talent that blends with a unique style.

As the crowd impatiently waited to see Tigan on stage, tension kept mounting Tigan over the number of revellers in attendance.

And when he stepped on stage, the slim singer was ambushed with extreme joy from the audience as his eyes feasted on more than a full house.

And he couldn't let this just go unnoticed so he said, "Thanks a lot for supporting me, I always thought Sabrina's Pub was such a huge place, but it now looks extremely small that you cannot even fit and I know you shall once prove to me that even Nakivubo is small," Tigan said attracting wild cheers from revellers.

Roger Mugisha took Tigan around on a meet and greet CD auction that saw the Lwaki Onninza star garner more than Shs1.5m before he started performing some of his greatest hits like Abogezi, Lwaki Onninza, Love Enzita, Pretty Gal and Emiranga as fans excitedly cheered him on while others sang along.

Then, lights went off and everybody considered the show over, but when they were switched on again, everybody was taken by surprise as the Trinidad & Tobago reggae star Marlon Asher, commonly identified by his hit Ganja Planter, jumped onto the stage to join Tigan to do their duet My Country.

Given that everybody expected Asher to arrive in Uganda on Wednesday, seeing him do his thing five days before left revellers surprised and some could have thought he wasn't the one.
