Bujumbura — Fuel worth of more than 24 million Burundian francs was stolen from the national assembly.
An investigation to find those responsible for this theft is underway. An administrative and Financial officer, the manager of vehicles as well as one driver are in the custody of the judicial police pending interrogation.
According to various sources contacted by Burundi Realites Agence Press, this theft began in February when the driver of the secretary general of the assembly stole the orders book and the official seal and forged the signature of the financial manager. This driver then acquired fuel from the gas station at his will. From February up to two weeks ago, over 24 million Burundian francs worth of fuel was stolen.
This could grow into a scandal that will blemish the present institution, but cases of theft of fuel and other materials have plagued many other state institutions. There have been other allegations of stolen vehicles in the national assembly during the last decade, but there was no investigation into these reported thefts.
