Nigeria: Bomb Scare - Police Search Social Critic's Home

Lafia — Police in Lafia, yesterday stormed residence of a renowned social critic in the state, Mr David Allu, in what may be an attempt to unravel myths surrounding assassination attempts on Governor of Nasarawa State, Aliyu Akwe Doma.

Allu, who is the Executive Director of Project Agape, a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) based in Lafia, is being questioned by the police, over his criticism of government and government policies, especially on poverty alleviation.

The team, which stormed the house in four truck-loads of policemen, was led by an Assistant Commissioner of police (names withheld).

The search, according to findings, may not be unconnected with the recent bomb scare at the government house.

Last Tuesday, the police bomb squad attached to government house, Lafia, discovered a bomb in a flower bed, few meters from the parking lot of the state governor.

Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, in his reaction to the incident, said the bomb, which was of high risk and capable of doing a lot of damage, was targeted at the state governor.

According to eye-witness, policemen did a thorough search of the house before leaving with no sign of evidence.

Allu was said to have traveled out of town for an official assignment and was not at home at the time the police came. However, we also gathered that the police may have invited Allu when he gets back for interrogation. All efforts to get the Police Pubic Relations Officer (PPRO) to comment on the issue proved abortive as he was said not to be in town. Efforts to reach him on his mobile phone also proved abortive as his phone was switched off.
