Nigeria: Nuclear Power Plant'll Complement Our Efforts - NERC

Lagos — The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission has said that the plan by the Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Agency (NNRA) to license operators of nuclear power plants would complement the objectives of the Commission.

Commenting on the announcement last week by the NNRA to license operators of nuclear power plants in the country, the Commissioner, Government and Consumer Affairs, Mrs Grace Eyoma, said that both organisations have complementary roles to play in ensuring improved power generation in the country.

According to her, "Anything that has to do with power and licensing has to come from us. I know that nuclear energy is peculiar because of the political nature of it. You have the International Atomic Energy Agency to involve in that.

"But if indeed they want to get involved in power I am sure they would want to partner with us. Nuclear Agency is about nuclear technology and sciences and if they have anything to do with power it is in tandem with what we are doing and I am sure they would collaborate with us," she said.

The Federal Government had under its energy policy adopted by the immediate past administration of President Olusegun Obasanjo mandated relevant government departments and agencies to collaborate on diversifying sources of power generation available in the country.
