Kigali — Rwanda has embarked on a process of improving the quality of its agricultural products for exports. The project is being supported by the government of Israel.
Representatives of the Standards Institute of Israel (SIS) have been Rwanda carrying out studies and consultative workshops organized by the ministry of commerce, industry, investment promotion, cooperatives and tourism and the Rwanda Bureau of Standards (RBS).
The head of laboratory testing at RBS Mr. Phillip Nzaire Speaking told East African Business Week that SIS has partnered with Rwanda to promote capacity building in order to boost export figures. "This will enable the country to export better quality products particularly in the agricultural sector."
The training centre manager at the SIS Ms. Orlin Natsia said the workshop aimed at the harmonization of standards between the two countries.
"Israel and Rwanda have a lot in common. The size of the country and the ratio of population to size is quite similar. RBS has exhibited good standards in the three days we have worked together."
Nzaire explained that the co-operation will be both short and long term involving training with Israeli expertise.
After the workshop the team from Israel had the opportunity of visiting tea estates in the northern part of the country.
