There will be an East Africa Community (EAC) regional workshop on mainstreaming Gender, HIV and Aids interventions into the various regional development sectors and strategic plans in the Partner States, that will begin August 27-29 2007 at the Ngurdoto Mountain Lodge in Arusha, Tanzania.

the workshop was prepared by the East African Community Secretariat, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD) and the World Bank.

It will be officially opened by the Secretary General of the East African Community (EAC), Ambassador Juma V. Mwapachu, will be attended by Representatives from UNDP, UNAIDS, UNICEF and NEPAD.

The meeting is expected to be about 70 participants from the Partner States to be drawn from agriculture, education and youth, transport, industry, gender, labour and social welfare, fishing, public works/road construction, finance and planning, health sectors and the National Aids Commissions. Participants also expected from the National HIV and Aids Focal Points, UNDP, UNAIDS, UNICEF and UNFPA.

Mean while, the East African Community (EAC) and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) have signed a project document, which will enable EAC Partner States to match their statistics methodologies and tools for the 2010 round of census and social statistics.

The Deputy Secretary General (Finance and Administration) of the East African Community, Dr. Julius Tangus Rotich signed on behalf of the EAC, while Mr. Benson C. Morah; Director, UNFPA Country Technical Services, witnessed on behalf of UNFPA according to Dr. Julius T. Rotich , the East African Community Development Strategy 2006 - 2010 deals with the consolidation of the EAC Customs Union and the formation of the EAC Common Market, which calls for robust and reliable statistics for planning, monitoring and evaluation.

He said the EAC-UNFPA census and statistical project is geared towards synchronising the mthods to be used along with the tools.

The project will focus on pushing for wise participation in the 2010 round of census, strategies for resource mobilisation to facilitate production of demographic statistics and sharing of resources in carrying out census activities in all the EAC States.
