Ghana: Cocainemania in Tema

The substance that was hidden in18 slabs in the shape of a Bible and seized by the Tema police command recently, have now turned out to be what is known in the Ghanaian parlance as Kokonte (cassava flour) after it was sent to the Ghana Standard Board for analytical report.

The police are of the view that the substances were a scam, which was being executed by some criminals to dupe some people on the pretext of selling cocaine to them.

DSP Samuel Kwesi Ofori, acting Director of Police Public Relations told The Chronicle in an interview that "whatever way one sees it, but from both ends they are all criminal acts."

He explained that both the suspected criminals and the people who were suspected to have been victims of the fraudulent acts when identified by the police would be arrested since they were all illegal.

He continued that on August 28,the Tema Regional Command together with the Organized Crime Unit of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) forwarded the stuff for analytical examination however; it proved to be corn flour and corn dough DSP Ofori said the Astra vehicle in which the suspected cocaine was concealed is not registered emphasizing that the registration number it bore was fake.

"The chassis number when checked with the Customs Excise and Preventive Service (CEPS) indicated that the car was not registered.

He intimated that all efforts to get the informant in the case to disclose his identity has proved futile while the police have not been able to arrest any of the suspects yet. He called on the members of the public who have information on the transaction to release it to the police

It would be recalled that on August 24 The Tema police located a vehicle around the Tema Port containing 18 slabs of substances contained in an Astra vehicle.

Speaking to members of the media, the Tema Regional Police Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Kudalor said the Police had had a tip off that the said Opel Astra car was carrying some quantity of cocaine was heading towards the Tema Port and was expected to arrive to board one of the vessels.The Opel Astra car was subsequently found specifically at around the premises of the defunct Meridian Hotel, near the Harbour area.
