Kampala — The Indian Malayalees Community hailing from Kerala state in India celebrated the traditional Onam Day, writes Donald Kiirya.
The day is marked by the Malayalees worldwide in memory of King Mahabali, their former state and religious leader.
The celebrations, attended by over 40 Indian families at Anthony Chacko's residence in Old Kampala on Saturday, included traditional dances and serving of 22 traditional vegetable dishes.
The function started with the lighting of a traditional lamp called Nilavilakhe.
The president of the African region of World Malayalee Council, Jacob John Poovathoor, and the president of the Uganda province, Joe Villani, appealed to the members to unite and fight corruption and betrayal, the things Mahabali fought against during his reign.
