Ghana: BA Roots for Aliu

Atiku Iddrisu

7 September 2007

Accra — As a sign of goodwill and commitment to the cause of Vice President Alhaji Aliu Mahama, hundreds of NPP party members including some constituency executives from all the 24 constituencies in the Brong Ahafo Region thronged the premises of Genaat Hotel in Berekum last Saturday to witness the inauguration of Club A 600, a group loyal to the Vice President.

Amidst brass band music, the party men clad in party colours danced and sang praises in solidarity with the Vice President's intention to contest the flagbearership race of the NPP.

Speaker after speaker vowed to do their possible best to ensure that Alhaji Aliu Mahama is elected as the flagbearer of the NPP, citing his leadership qualities, experience at the Presidency and his humility to in wanting hold himself accountable to the party and the nation as a whole.

The Berekum District Chief Executive, Mr. Kwabena Kyere Yeboah, who was the guest of honour at the event, called on party men to eschew negative tendencies that could destroy the party. He challenged them to, irrespective of their individual differences, remain united as members of one great family.

The National President of Club A 600, Mr. Stephen Deelarbi, said as President Kufuor is about to leave office the NPP needs someone with experience, respect, commitment to the party and nation, as well as competence to continue with the good works of the Kufour-led NPP government .

"We have sat and analyzed all of the presidential hopefuls and I can confidently tell you that none of them combines the requisite leadership qualities better than Vice President Alhaji Aliu Mahama. He has gathered much experience on the job as the vice president, especially having acted on several occasions as president when President Kufuor is away. He doesn't need to take some time to get adjusted to the working environment of the presidency because he is already there", Mr. Deelarbi stated.

Speaking on popularity, Mr. Deelarbi described Alhaji Aliu Mahama as the most popular candidate among other aspirants and said "we don't need too much to market such a person".
