Asmara

The Somali Congress for Liberation and Reconstitution, in which more than 350 people from inside Somalia and abroad are taking part, continued its session for the second day.

The participants represent different social groups of Somali society, including parliament members, leaders of Union of Islamic Courts, clan heads, intellectuals, community elders and religious leaders. In the afternoon hours yesterday, the participants elected a committee, which will chair elections in the Congress, and a secretariat. A paper highlighting the history of the struggle and independence of the Somali people was also presented.

The Congress spokesman and former Minister of Information, Mr. Zekaria Mahmoud Abdu, told journalists that the holding of the Congress in Asmara is decisive in driving out the invading forces of the TPLF regime and the establishment of a united Somalia.

He further indicated that although 16 congresses were previously held in different countries, they ended up in utter failure due to the fact that such congresses only served the agendas of external forces pushing aside the issue of the Somali people. In contrast, the current Congress in Asmara enjoys the support of all Somali parties and peace-loving forces for it represents all sections of the Somali society and aims at ensuring the national interest of Somalia, Mr. Zekaria Mahmoud Abdu stated.

He went on to explain that at a time when Somalia and its people are being subjected to enormous atrocities on the part of the invading Meles regime, and when service-rendering institutions have totally collapsed, it is quite disturbing to witness the international community paying a deaf ear to the situation.
