Djibouti: Project Aims to Interconnect Two Countries

The Government concluded an agreement with three international contractors for the implementation of an electrification project aimed at interconnecting the country with Djibouti.
Meheret Debebe, General Manager of EEPCO signed the project agreement with three international contractors in a ceremony at the Hilton Under the agreement, the Indian, Italian French companies will imp0liment the project on both sides.
The companies are to enter in to similar agreements with Djibouti later this week.
The agreement consists of three packages.
The $ 38 million first projects signed with the Indian Company, Kalpataru covers the construction of 201 KM of 230 KV transmission line from Dire Dawa in the east all the way to close to Djibouti border.
The second project signed with the Italian Company Siemens SpA covers the construction of a 230 KV extension to the existing substation in Dire Dawa and the construction of a new 230/33 substation in Adigala of Ethiopian towns.
The second project costs $ 30 million.
The third project that was signed with French company ETDE covers electrification of border towns only on the Ethiopian side, and worths $ 13 million. The project will help eight Ethiopian border towns to have electricity.
The project construction is expected to be completed within 20 months with an in service date of July 2009.

"This project can be a model to African and a high way to connect Africa to the Middle East . It will also create strong economic and social value to both countries," Debebe said after signing the agreements with the three companies.
Debebe indicated that around 60 % of the project cost will be covered by African development Bank (ADB), while Ethiopia and Djibouti will have to cover 40 % of the total costs.
Mr. Jerome Douat, Commercial Manager Africa, of the French company, Vincenzo Giori, Chief Executive Officer of the Italian company and P.S.Kumar of the Indian companies signed the agreements on behalf of their respective companies.
