The largest city of the Oromia Regional State, Jimma, will be busy this week hosting the second largest Millennium concert in the country. The prominent singer Tewodros Kasahun, aka Tedi Afro, is expected to glitter one of the town's stages accompanied by other local artists; Getachew Hailemariam, an Oromiffa singer and Tigist Woyiso. Comedians - Dereje Haile, Tilahun Elfineh and Wanosoch - are also expected to entertain their fans at the festivity.
Tedi told Fortune that he would perform in Jimma on September 11, 2007.
"I do not have any other performances for the Millennium," Tedi told Fortune.
It is estimated that almost 30,000 spectators would attend the concert whose entrance fee is 50 Br per person. The concert will be held at a gymnasium in front of Awetu Amusement Park where the local youth spend their time playing football, volleyball, basketball and practicing gymnastics.
The organiser of this event is Tedi Studio Plc, which is popular for its movie productions. Movies produced by this company include Seol, Kezkaza Wolafen, Fikir Siferd and the latest, Red Mistake. Moreover this company has launched its own cinema hall, Sebastopol Cinema, at the Addis Abeba Exhibition Centre located in Meskel Square at a cost of close to one million Birr.
Tewodros Teshome, owner and general manager of the company told Fortune that the preparations have been finalised.
"What is left is the hauling in of the party-goers," an excited Tewodros said.
Sixty buses have been readied for the spectators that will be leaving for Jimma and accommodation facilities are also under preparation.
Kefyalew Ayana, deputy mayor of Jimma, told Fortune that agreements have been reached with 40 hotel owners in the city on how to give better services to guests. He also disclosed that 3,000 beds have been obtained from the Jimma University for the visitors.
Jimma, a town well known for its coffee produces, is located 347Km west of Addis Abeba. After the bitter religious conflicts, which took the lives of many in the town last year, many hope that Tedi's performance would make them forget the harsh scars left in their minds. Tedi had sung a song advocating love that goes beyond religious convictions in his latest album released in 2005.
Many youths of the town are undertaking beautification projects looking forward to watching the live performances of the singers, especially Tedi.
