editorial
When I woke up on Sunday and found the above message on my cellphone, I thought of Pamela Dube, Voice Editor's invitation to go to church.
Although I always feel 20, the message made me feel a hundred years old, especially the part on the sustenance. So this is how some guys view us older women, as meal tickets and providers! When I called the number that sent the message, the voice on the other end was not one I knew.
But this put my mind on a thinking mode. What prompts a young guy, I will say young because, he says I am older and more mature, to send an older woman a message and boldly inform her that he wants to be sustained.
At least this one is honest. Imagine the young guys who hit on older women, promising them eternal love, just to milk them dry to entertain those they have something in common with. Not that people with an age gap can't date. They can and some are able to love each other against all odds. But older women have to go into these type of relationships with their eyes open to avoid hurt and disappointment.
What with HIV/AIDS and car accidents having robbed many of their mothers. In some cases you become the 'mother' as my 'guy' articulately states that I represent a 'maternal ï¬"ure'.
But the question is, if I am the 'maternal ï¬"ure' what about the lover ï¬"ure? Won't he need a partner ï¬"ure? That's where the heartache begins-when he starts looking for those other ï¬"ures, not content with the 'maternal ï¬"ure.'
But we are living in a material world and as prices soar daily, the going gets tough. So 'old' ladies, and our 'old' men, when you open your hearts and your purses, be warned. It may be to sustain someone. The 'old' men are wise to keep the wife whilst spending the children's inheritance on expensive gifts for a sweet 16. Purpose: To boost an ego of a midlife crisis victim.
Happy weekend, and love wisely.
HIV Positive Sweet16s
Those children who were born with HIV in the early 90's are now in their sweet teens. Thanks to the antiretroviral (ARV) roll-out, they have a new lease on life.
Interesting is that some men who despite that our country has lived with HIV/AIDS for over 22 years still believe that you can cleanse yourself of the HI virus by sleeping with a younger person. They call this evil deed, cleansing the blood. What they don't realise is that some of the children they are cleansing their blood with, are also HIV positive.
To get reinfected is poetic justice for these dirty old men who don't think twice about infecting a young girl with HIV for a selfish reason. When they have sex with an HIV negative teenager they don't think of the consequence of infecting them and changing an innocent life forever.
We should all take HIV/AIDS as our social responsibility and stop new infections by changing our attitude towards sex. Teenagers are at an even higher risk since some of their peers were born with the HI Virus.
