Asmara — Following extensive discussions yesterday, participants of the Somali Congress for Liberation and Reconstitution approved a 30-article constitution that would serve to drive out the invading TPLF regime's forces, the Congress spokesman told journalists.
Stating that despite the forwarding of different views regarding concepts, strategies and tactics, Mr. Zekaria Mahmoud Abdu, Congress spokesman and former Information Minister, said that a common agreement was reached and that almost all issues have been resolved after in-depth discussions. He went on to explain that the remaining task is to hold an election for members of the Central Council, the Chairman and Secretary of the organization to be formed as a result of the Congress.
Expressing satisfaction with the statement the Italian Deputy Foreign Minister issued yesterday in response to the on-going Congress in Asmara, in which he pointed out the miserable conditions that the Somali people are being exposed to due to the TPLF regime's invasion, the Congress spokesman called on other countries to take a similar, positive step.
Mr. Zekaria indicated that the Congress received a report of atrocious crimes committed against the civilian population in Mogadishu on the part of the invading forces. As part of such atrocities, the TPLF authorities have closed the main Bakara Market of Mogadishu, resorting to massive looting and exposing the population to hunger in the process, he added.
Moreover, the spokesman stated that the Congress called on humanitarian organizations to extend urgent relief aid to the victims of the crimes being committed by the TPLF regime.
Expressing deep regret with the silence of African leaders over the invasion of Somalia, Mr. Zekaria said that keeping silent when an African country commits open invasion against another African country encourages others to do the same. He also called for the change of location of the headquarters of the African Union from Addis Ababa, the capital of the country that has invaded Somalia in gross violation of the AU Charter principles.
