African  countries should fully take advantage of Ethiopia's millennium celebrations to further enhance relations and better understanding within the continent, Ethiopia's Ambassador to Zimbabwe Mr Abdi Dolal Mohamed has said. Ethiopia today marks its New Year and millennium, a unique event, which was celebrated by the rest of the world eight years ago.

In an interview yesterday, Mr Mohamed said the event would be used to further strengthen ties among African states. "As we celebrate our New Year and beginning of a new millennium we want this event to unite Africa as delegates from across the continent interact and exchange ideas during the Millennium Festival celebrations," said Mr Mohamed.

He added that celebrations of the event, which was declared an "African Occasion" would also be used as an opportunity to encourage African countries to be united and assist one another for the development of the continent.

"African countries should assist each other. There is no way out or the continent will remain a victim of imperialists. We need to enhance regional trade and also increase cultural exchange programmes," Mr Mohamed said. He said Africa has to develop its own science and technology and through this, Africa can overcome its challenges. He said fellow African countries should also draw lessons from Ethiopia, which has gone through hard times and has overcome various challenges. Zimbabwe, Mr Mohamed said, should use this event to exploit the various business opportunities during the celebrations, which would also be attended by delegates from Asia, Europe and the United States.

A delegation of 20 businesspeople from Zimbabwe is expected to attend the festival. They will have an opportunity to showcase their own products. The festival will also give them an opportunity to interact and exchange views and ideas with their business counterparts in Ethiopia and across the world. Business opportunities can be found in the textile industry, metals, leather, chemical and agro-processing industries.

Ethiopia is the oldest civilisation in the world and it is one of the few countries with a long recorded history.
