Uganda: Mother Held Over Dead Child

Kampala — THE Police have arrested a woman who allegedly dumped her baby in a pit latrine.

Allen Nakiganda, 18, gave birth to the baby girl on September 6 and killed it in Mutungo Zone II parish.

Nakiganda was a maid to Eva Nagira, who discovered the incident when she visited the latrine. Kampala Police spokesman Simeo Nsubuga said Najira heard the toddler crying within the pit and alerted the area LCs who notified the Police Fire Brigade.

Parading Nakiganda, before the press at Jinja Road Police Station, he said efforts to rescue the child were futile even after it was pulled out alive. The child later died in Mulago Hospital.

However, Nakiganda claimed misfortune befell her when she went to answer a call of nature.

"The child just came out and feel into the latrine," she said amid sobs adding that it was not her intention to kill the child.

"She will appear in court over charges of infanticide," Nsubuga added.
