The head of State, Honourable Pierre Nkurunziza, has changed the tone of his language towards opposition members of Parliament. He indicates that talks with the opposition parties have begun and that a common ground will soon be found. He said this in Karuzi province where he has been on a visit since 13 September 2007 and where he met police and army officers of the 4th region today. Another meeting with these officers was held in Muyinga almost one month ago. At that time, news about the fabrication of a coup aimed at silencing the opposition began to spread. The President of the Republic later denied the existence of any coup through his spokesman.

The current message of the President of the Republic is contrary to the one first delivered in Rutana where a campaign aimed at defaming the opposition members of the parliament was launched on 3rd August of this year after an unprecedented impasse came about in the national assembly.

After strong pressure has been exerted by the international community, talks with opposition parties have begun, although they are still far from reaching the much awaited agreement that would result in the appointment of a cabinet in accordance with the Constitution.
