The Interior ministry has decided to suspend the meetings of the central committee of Uprona. One meeting was scheduled for 15 September for the followers of Aloys Rubuka, the leader of Uprona, and another meeting was scheduled for 16 September for those loyal to the assistant leader, Antoine Cishahayo.

The interior ministry indicates that these meetings were suspended after the conflicting sides failed to agree on a date. The interior ministry fears that these meetings might be sabotaged by supporters of either of the opposing wings.

The troubles currently facing Uprona originated in the cabinet reshuffle carried out on 13 July. The First Vice-President of the Republic, Dr Martin Nduwimana, was accused by some members of Uprona of having played a major role in the appointment of this cabinet to the disfavour of his party. Punitive actions were taken against Dr Nduwimana, although Antoine Cishahayo, the assistant of the leader of Uprona, was opposed to this move. Dr Nduwimana was dismissed from Uprona on 23 August 2007 on the grounds that he was using the country's means to destroy his party. This dismissal has created two wings within the Upona party that have failed to agree on any way to resolve their crisis which has now escalated to the point of confrontation.

This decision of the interior ministry might be considered fair since none of the dates proposed by either of the two opposing wings was accepted. The interior ministry did not oppose the meeting held by the ruling party in Ngozi some months ago which resulted in the dismissal of Hussein Radjabu as the leader of CNDD-FDD.
