Arusha — A marathon to beat them all, dubbed The Serengeti Half Marathon, is under preparations and is billed to attract runners from across the world.
The Serengeti marathon has so far attracted 50 Dutch participants who will start their adventure in Arusha riding bikes to Wasso hospital in Loliondo before taking on the grueling 24km run.
The run in the wild of northern Tanzania is expected to take place in March next year and survey of the route has started.
According to coordinators of the event, the marathon, the first of its kind, will help raise funds for construction of medical staff houses at Wasso hospital, a designated hospital of the area.
One of the problems confronting Wasso hospital is lack of staff houses. This has led to many qualified staff declining to work at the hospital.
The hospital was founded in 1964 by a Catholic Priest and Physician, the late Dr. Herbert Watschinger. Until his death in 1991 funds and donations originated mainly from private and church related sources in Austria.
Since 1995 Wasso hospital officially functioned as the district designated hospital for Ngorongoro district with curative, preventive and promotive services. The designation is based on an agreement between the Catholic Diocese of Arusha as the legal owner and the Ministry of Health for the Tanzanian government. The hospital is since then entitled to receive government grants for staff, drugs and other charges.
