Abuja — Decision by Ekiti State government to serve as buyer of last resort of all farm produce from farmers in the state has be described as an effort to propel the farmers to grow more crops in the next farming season.
Also, about N2billion is to been spent by the state government for the re-introduction of boarding school system in the state, to improve education.
Making this disclosure in a chat with journalists in Abuja, the Ekiti State Governor, Segun Oni, said "our decision to buy all farm produce from farmers in the state is to prevent them from getting frustrated.
"We realised most of them were complaining of having excess produce that they could not dispense, if we fail to do this, they will not grow more for next year," he said.
The government intervention is to proffer a way out for them; we are capable of carrying the burden for them. The government have the clout to sell the excess produces; we can go into product manufacturing that is why we were encouraged to go on air to announce that those of them with excess farm produces can sell to us."Ekiti state is the only state in the country today, where the government is the buyer of last resort, buying up all produce of farmers in the state is in the interest of our people." He added.
However, to ensure agriculture becomes a stem of the state economy, Oni revealed that 11 large farms have been established across the state.According to him the farms were established with the need to take advantage of the comparative advantage of a particular crop in the different areas of the state.A development, he said has led to the restructuring of the state ministry of agriculture to meet the new challenges.The governor, who spoke through his chief of staff, barrister Segun ILori further explained the government's decision on the reintroduction of boarding school system in the state.Said he: "To improve our educational sector, the state is going back to the bases by re introducing boarding school system in the state by October this year.The new initiative, would involve every school were the PTA and the school management has agreed to adopt the scheme and the state government will support it fully. About 2 billion naira will be used on the project."Ilori, who further explained some of the achievements the state has been able to make in its first 100 days in power, stressed that the health and housing sector received massive boost with the treatment of 500 persons with eye related diseases and the establishment of 4 new housing estate across the state were work is ongoing to meet the housing needs of the people.
