Dar es Salaam — About three weeks ago, Burundi, the hosts and winners of the inaugural CECAFA U-17 championships walked off the winner's podium with just a trophy to show for.
However, more will be added unto them after Barclays Tanzania offered the Council of East and Central Africa Football Associations (Cecafa) $17,200 (Tsh22m) for Burundi and Uganda, the runners-up. Tanzania President Jakaya Kikwete donated the trophy.
At the presentation ceremony in Dar es Salaam, Barclays Tanzania Managing Director Rished Bade said the aim of sponsoring the youth tourney was to lift the standards of soccer in the region.
The Cecafa Secretary General Nicholas Musonye thanked the bank and promised Barclays would send the money to the respective countries at the earliest time possible.
Breaking down the sum, Burundi will get $7,800 (Tsh10m) while Uganda will take $3,900 (Tsh5m) and third-placed Kenya $1,500 (Tsh2m).
Meanwhile, Taifa Stars and Mozambique's Group Seven Nations Cup qualifying cracker at the new 60,000-seater Dar es Salaam stadium fetched $474,500 (Tsh605,020,000).
The Tanzania Football Federation (TFF) Finance Director, Mr Silas Mwakibinga last week, revealed this. The amount was collected from the 55,514 fans that thronged the stadium in anticipation of a win for Tanzania.
In detail, $29,100 (Tsh37, 150,000) was collected from VIP 'A', $61,800 (Tsh78,920,000) - VIP 'B' and $52,750 (Tsh67,260,000) - VIP 'C'.
Mozambique won the match 1-0, thus relegating the Taifa Stars to the third spot. Senegal qualified as group winners after their 5-1 demolition of Burkina Faso in Dakar. Tanzania will now switch its attention to the CECAFA Championhips due later this year.
