Uganda: Kampala to Sparkle

Tony Barigye

17 September 2007

Kampala — KAMPALA city is to undergo intense cleaning ahead of CHOGM following an exercise launched to minimise waste accumulation at household and business level.

The waste sorting exercise, titled, 'Kampala Etemagane' was launched by Hope Mwesigye, the minister of state for local government, at Emerald Hotel, recently.

At the launch, Godfrey Kiseka, the principal assistant town clerk for central division, said Kampala City Council's garbage trucks were in a poor state yet garbage collection is a daily activity.

"Only eight of our vehicles are functioning," he said.

However, the minister blamed the poor condition of the trucks on KCC's failure to repair them.

"The ministry repaired the vehicles. They only lacked tyres. How could you (KCC) fail to replace them? Mwesigye asked.

She promised to give KCC sh20m to buy fuel for the trucks for garbage collection.

Kiseka said almost 70% of the buildings in Kampala had been painted.

The minister stated that an unclean environment depicted low levels of nationalism.

"One wonders why our level of nationalism is very low. It is because our cities are dirty," Mwesigye said.
